Blog1, welcome to the bloggersphere!

Welcome!

Now that I am officially welcomed into the bloggersphere I assume that I should introduce myself. My name is Caitlyn; I am currently studying my Bachelor of Communication. Whilst on the topic of communication, the purpose of this blog is to keep an update of my New Communication Technologies class.

Lecture 2
When introduced into my second lecture, the key theme for the class was ‘is email dead’? The lectures discussion was based around the key principles of email, its pros and cons as well as its place in society and communication. Mainly the discussion was focused on emails cons.

∙ SPAM
-Is an annoyance and floods your inbox with unwanted mail.
-Common scams (most recognised include Bank scams and promises of consumer goods).
-‘Fishing’ where companies or false organisations market promises of wealth and consumer products in exchange for your personal details (bank accounts).

However, emails positives where also explored.

∙An easily accessed form of communication
∙A way of keeping in touch with family, friends, and business
∙Coming of age technology (always improving)

Aside from the debate about email, we briefly discussed the topic of web blogs, their significance and whether or not they are a reliable source of information. To introduce us to the discussion our lecturer played a clip from Jon Stuart’s talk show that discussed or more likely mocked the idea of blogging in modern day cyberspace.
The main forms of blogging are used for political discussion, current affairs, and the life styles of the rich and famous. The question was raised whether or not we can rely on the information provided to us from blogs, as there is usually no reference and just a person’s point of view. The film clip showed a humorous spin on this idea and was a simple way of explaining this issue concerned with blogging.

Personally, I use email regularly and aside from the spam and unwanted forwards, I believe it to be a very reliable source of communication. As for web blogs, I’m not the best judge, as I have only really kept something of a blog on MySpace. However I can understand the points discussed, and agree that how do we know whether a blog is reliable?

Until next week,
Ciao
